Chairs, Department Heads, Faculty, Area Heads, Supervisors or Managers
Must ensure that:
- all staff, students and visitors comply with all applicable regulations and university policies and procedures;
- an up to date copy of this guide is maintained and all area personnel comply;
- area specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are created;
- training is provided to all staff and students initially and each time new procedures or hazards are introduced;
- information on special or unusual hazards in non–routine work has been distributed to all personnel;
- the use of safety procedures, including necessary personal protective equipment, engineering controls or work practices are implemented and enforced;
- any area where hazardous chemicals are used or stored are secured when not in use;
- all hazardous chemicals are properly labeled and stored;
- an up to date chemical inventory for all chemicals are maintained in the Temple University Chemical Environmental Management System (CEMS);
- all employees exposure to hazardous chemicals are kept below legally defined limits as set forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA.)
- all necessary personal protective clothing and equipment is provide at no cost to the employee. Students are required to use PPE but the University is not required to provide. Respiratory use must comply with the requirements of the Respiratory Protection Standard;
- all engineering controls are maintained and functioning properly;
- Material Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and other relevant safety reference materials are readily available;
- All chemical waste is disposed of properly through EHRS
- Any unsafe acts, condition, or inadequate facilities are reported to the Department Chair, Director and/or EHRS.
These responsibilities may not be shifted to inexperienced or untrained personnel.
Area Personnel/Students
Must ensure that you:
- comply with all applicable regulations and university policies and procedures;
- read and follow the guidelines listed in this document;
- read and follow any specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOP);
- attend any required training initially and each time new procedures or hazards are introduced;
- request information or training when unsure about how to handle a hazardous chemical or procedure;
- request information on special or unusual hazards in non–routine work;
- follow safety procedures, including necessary personal protective equipment, engineering controls or work practices;
- use chemical/supplies/equipment that is approved by your department head, faculty or Supervisor;
- read and review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for any chemical prior to use;
- perform only authorized work, preparations and experiments;
- Report any unsafe acts, conditions, injuries, potential exposures or inadequate facilities to the Department Chair, Faculty, Supervisor, Director and/or EHRS.
